To improve security in Europe, the EU is introducing a new IT system for entry and exit at the EU's external borders.
The EU will not launch the EES (Entry/Exit System) on 10 November 2024, the launch has been postponed to 2025.

Entry/Exit System (EES) - this electronic system automatically registers the entry and exit of all non-EU citizens - including Ukrainians - regardless of whether they require a Schengen visa or whether their country is in a visa-free regime, each time they cross the external borders of the Schengen area. However, it will not apply to those holding an EU residence permit or a long-stay visa.
The EES will be implemented not only by EU Member States, but also by the Schengen countries - Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Two EU countries - Cyprus and Ireland - have been exempted and will not participate in the EES.
For more details see the link.

What will change?

  • This system will eliminate manual passport control and the stamping of passports at the border, i.e. the registration of travellers in the electronic database will be done automatically - through self-service terminals. Travellers will have to scan their passports or other travel documents each time they cross the border, whether entering or leaving the country.

Main functions of the EES system

  1. Registration of entries and exits: The EES collects, records and stores data on entry into and exit from the EU, including the place of border crossing, information on previous refusal of entry and details of the travel document.
  2. Information exchange: The EES is integrated with other EU databases, such as the Visa Information System (VIS) and the EU Citizen System (SIS), providing a complete and accurate picture of the movements of third-country nationals.
  3. Calculation of the duration of stay: The system automatically calculates how long a traveller has been in the Schengen area, allowing automatic detection of cases of overstay (maximum 90 days in a 180-day period), thus facilitating the work of border guards and preventing infringements.
  4. Personal data: Face and fingerprints will be scanned every 3 years and will be valid for several trips during this period. These data will be stored in an electronic database for 3 years after each journey. If the traveller refuses to provide biometric data, he/she will be denied access to the territory of European countries.

Why is the EU introducing the Entry/Exit System?

  • modernising border management,
  • enhancing security through biometric documents
  • preventing illegal migration,
  • identification of persons present in the EU
  • preventing the use of false documents or passports,
  • detecting and investigating terrorist and other crimes
