As part of the policy of distancing itself from the Soviet heritage, which has intensified since the beginning of the full scale russian invasion of Ukraine, Moldova will change the three-letter international abbreviation of Chisinau airport from KIV to RMO. Reuters reports this with reference to the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Andrei Spinu.
All airports are given unique three-letter codes that can be seen when booking tickets, on flight schedules, on airport boards, and on baggage tags. The KIV code is based on the russian spelling and pronunciation of the name of the country's capital. In the Romanian spelling – Chișinău – two of three letters are missing (the only official language of Moldova is Romanian). RMO stands an abbreviation for the Republic of Moldova or equivalent phrases in Romanian or English.
Only the 3-letter IATA code will be changed. The 4-letter ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) code for Chisinau Airport will be the same - LUKK.
Of the largest airports in the post Soviet space, only Astana airport has changed its IATA code. Let us remind you that from June 8, 2020, the capital’s airport officially changed the name of the three-letter code from TSE to NQZ. During its existence since 1930, the airport previously known: until 1961 – Akmolinsk, until 1992 – Tselinograd, from 1992 to 1998 – Akmola, in 1998-2017 – Astana. The airport in Kazakhstan's capital has been renamed in honor first President Nursultan Nazarbayev on June 21, 2017.
